Abstract

Purpose

Aims to assess the surgeons' communication skills with patients in the orthopaedic department of the authors' district general hospital.

Design/methodology/approach

A departmental prospective audit was conducted involving all consultants and middle grade surgeons. Then authors used a validated questionnaire (Doctors' Interpersonal Skills Questionnaire (DISQ)) completed by patients and analysed independently. Feedback was obtained through individual confidential reports and a study group meeting.

Findings

A total of 402 patient evaluations were received and the average interpersonal skills index was 72 per cent ranging between 55 per cent and 87 per cent. The highest scores were given for respect shown, warmth of greeting and patients' confidence in the surgeon's abilities. The lowest scores were given for time given to patients to express their concerns.

Research limitations/implications

The research has an incomplete audit circle. A second audit is required following appropriate training to alleviate the deficiencies reported in the first audit and prove the benefit.

Practical implications

This audit highlighted important deficiencies in our interpersonal skills that could potentially be addressed by way of targeted training. This kind of assessment should become an essential part of the annual appraisal process of all hospital doctors.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to report the results of a departmental assessment process of hospital doctors using the DISQ.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present possible strategic actions that aim to recover the value still remaining in industrial waste.

Design/methodology/approach

The research method is a multiple case study. The sample included six Brazilian companies of the footwear, metal-mechanics, pulp and paper, beverages, chemical and food industries. The study investigated the production process, waste generation, internal reuse, the destination of unused waste, difficulties and strategic challenges.

Findings

Possible strategies to recover the value remaining in industrial waste are increasing the internal reuse, developing new routes to other industries, reducing the waste generation, increasing the destination to cooperatives or recycling companies, which require studies to understand the legislation and agility in licensing and reducing the logistical cost of the destination.

Research limitations/implications

The study relies on six case studies. Further research shall encompass an entire industry, starting with hypotheses derived from the cases.

Practical implications

The main barriers observed for reuse and recycling are uncertainties and ambiguities in the interpretation of legislation, the difficulty for the environmental licensing for recycling operations, excessive logistics costs for exploration opportunities and the lack of research to reduce the waste generation and to increase the internal reuse.

Social implications

Waste managed by scavengers’ cooperatives can offer jobs to the people of vulnerable communities.

Originality/value

The study offers robust hypotheses to be tested in a survey on the capacity of a waste management strategy to create competitive advantage in the industry. The study establishes a relationship between waste management and three competitive enablers, compliance, corporate image and green market.

Abstract

Purpose

Much is being claimed in terms of new forms of trade union networking and co‐ordination at the international level during the past two decades. However, there is a need to ground these views in terms of the reality and contexts of trade union activity. This article seeks to argue that tension within the different modes of international labour activity is nothing new. In fact, political and organisational differences in terms of the practices and strategies of the labour movement have been salient features of trade unionism for over a century. The article will map the interest in networking as a form of labour co‐ordination and the question of the emergence of competing international models of network‐based trade union action.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a general and literature review of the debates on labour internationalism supported by insights gained from a variety of research initiatives.

Findings

As noted by a variety of authors, the reality is that there are assorted types of global and international movements within trade unionism, which are based on four dimensions in terms of specific sectoral, ideological, organisational and national factors. There is a need is to understand the tensions between these models, and not just work from a “vertical” view of power based on hierarchies and levels.

Research limitations/implications

The paper is mainly a critical review of debates and discussions.

Practical implications

Network‐based initiatives should not just be contrasted with bureaucracy per se, but be understood in terms of distinct initiatives, meanings and politics. In fact, one could see the signs of emerging “managerialist” modes of labour internationalism.

Social implications

New forms of trade union and worker representation in a global context are engaging with social and political issues – they are engaging with a range of social and organisational activities such as those of non‐government organisations. These represent an important debate on the way work‐related issues are organised around.

Originality/value

The paper indicates how the question of labour networking is a significant academic discussion and needs to be seen from different perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore how the clinical governance policy and its main component, patient satisfaction, turned into practice and what they look like on the ground in the centralised health system of Iran.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research stance was adopted incorporating three main sources of information: face to face in‐depth interviews and focus groups conducted with hospital senior managers at the teaching hospitals in Kerman city, Iran, as well as documentary analysis of key policy texts. Nine hospital senior managers were purposefully selected for face‐to‐face interviews as well as a purposeful sample of 15 hospital senior managers for focus groups.

Findings

The documentary analysis revealed how clinical policy has been put into practice. The interview and focus group data analysis also disclosed four key themes with respect to how policy implementers in the Iranian centralised health system perceive nationally developed policies towards clinical governance and patient satisfaction. These include: a paper exercise; opaque, ambiguous policies; unstable policies; and separation of policy making from policy implementation.

Originality/value

The study revealed a perceived mismatch between the official proposals for clinical governance and their application in practice. The findings of this research lend support to the idea that there should be no separation between policy making process and its implementation; they are inseparable and should be treated in parallel, rather than in sequence. The study further suggests more accountability of the state towards its policies and public alike as a better governance of the health system. State‐level sustainability followed by allocating proper resources to implementation fields and empowering policy implementers coupled with good systems of performance control are the keys to keep patient focus a top priority.

Abstract

Since 2012, with the Growth Decree 2.0, the Italian Government has been engaged in promoting the establishment and the growth of new innovative startups with a high technological value. The general objective of the policy is to promote sustainable growth, technological advancement and innovation. In the Decree framework, startups have to own an innovative character that is identified by at least one of the following three criteria: investments in research and development, qualified workforce, holding patents or registered software. Such three characteristics can be considered as innovation inputs able to create the conditions for a competitive advantage and greater economic performance. The research objective is to analyze how innovation inputs in innovative startups affect their economic performance. Each input factor can have a different impact on the company profitability. To this end, we apply the methodology SMAA for strategic management analysis and assessment (or SMAA-S) to detect the relation between innovation and profitability in Italian startups.

Abstract

The overall goal of science is to build a valid and reliable body of knowledge about the functioning of the world and how applying that knowledge can change it. As personnel and human resources management researchers, we aim to contribute to the respective bodies of knowledge to provide both employers and employees with a workable foundation to help with those problems they are confronted with. However, what research on research has consistently demonstrated is that the scientific endeavor possesses existential issues including a substantial lack of (a) solid theory, (b) replicability, (c) reproducibility, (d) proper and generalizable samples, (e) sufficient quality control (i.e., peer review), (f) robust and trustworthy statistical results, (g) availability of research, and (h) sufficient practical implications. In this chapter, we first sing a song of sorrow regarding the current state of the social sciences in general and personnel and human resources management specifically. Then, we investigate potential grievances that might have led to it (i.e., questionable research practices, misplaced incentives), only to end with a verse of hope by outlining an avenue for betterment (i.e., open science and policy changes at multiple levels).

Abstract

We present several applications for 2D or axisymmetric elasticity problems of a method to control the quality of a finite element computation, and to optimize the choice of meshes. The method used, which is very general, is based (i) on the concept of error in constitutive relation and (ii) on explicit techniques to construct admissible fields. Illustrative examples are shown for several 2D or axisymmetric elements (3 or 6 node triangles, 4 or 8 node quadrilaterals). They have been achieved with our code ESTEREF, a post‐processor of error computation and mesh optimization which can be interfaced with any finite element code.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to contribute novel insights into understanding and mitigating the harmful consequences of abusive supervision (AS) by examining the association between AS experiences, revenge, forgiveness, and the moderating role of emotional intelligence (EI). The key argument is that employees' EI can influence the AS experience through affective processes, countering supervisors' abusive behaviors.

Methodology

A between-person scenario-based experiment was conducted with 366 participants divided into AS and control groups. The study explored the association between AS experience and revenge/forgiveness, mediated by core affect (valence and activation). EI abilities were measured as a moderator. Data analysis examined the relationships and interactions among AS, revenge/forgiveness, EI, and affective experiences.

Findings

The study reveals significant findings indicating that AS experiences were positively associated with revenge and negatively associated with forgiveness. The mediation analysis confirmed the role of core affect in these relationships. EI emerged as a moderator, shaping the association between AS experiences and revenge/forgiveness. Importantly, participants with higher EI exhibited lower revenge intentions, demonstrating the potential of EI to mitigate the adverse effects of AS. Unexpectedly, individuals with high EI also expressed fewer forgiveness intentions.

Originality/Value

This study provides a comprehensive understanding of how employees can effectively counterbalance the impact of AS through higher levels of strategic EI. Examining core affect as a mediator offers novel insights into coping mechanisms in response to AS experiences and their consequences.

Limitations

The study acknowledges several limitations, as the scenarios may only partially capture the complexities of real-life AS situations. The focus on a specific context and the sample characteristics limit the generalizability of the findings. Future research should explore diverse organizational contexts and employ longitudinal designs.

Implications

The findings have practical implications for organizations as enhancing employees' EI skills through training programs interventions and integrating EI into organizational culture and leadership conduct.
